AI Mode and AI Overviews are related but not identical surfaces: AI Overviews appear above classic results for many queries, while AI Mode is a separate conversational mode where the generated answer is the whole experience and the user can drill in with follow-ups. For sellers of software the behavioural difference matters more than the technical one — follow-up questions in AI Mode tend to move a buyer deeper into comparison territory (“how does it compare to X”, “which is cheaper for a 20-person team”), so the answers that shape the shortlist are assembled across a whole conversation, not a single query.
Underneath, the retrieval layer is still Google’s index and quality systems: a page that Google cannot crawl, index or trust is not a candidate for citation in any AI surface. That keeps the classic fundamentals load-bearing — indexation, entities, structured data, and the links and mentions that establish what the brand is — while changing what “ranked” means: the prize is being drawn into the answer and its sources. Measurement follows the same discipline as other AI surfaces: a fixed prompt set covering the comparison questions buyers ask, run on a schedule, reporting how often the brand and its pages appear as the answers evolve.
No vendor can guarantee inclusion in AI Mode’s output; what a campaign controls is the source material Google has to draw on, and the tracking that shows whether it did.
