In practice
The reasoning is tempting: several AI assistants draw on Bing’s index, so fast Bing indexation through IndexNow should feed AI visibility. Reality is messier — assistants using Bing have been observed citing pages that appear Bing-invisible, so Bing is a lever, not a guarantee, and treating it as the main AI play overweights it. The right posture is pragmatic: implement IndexNow — it is cheap, it accelerates ordinary Bing indexation, and Bing search traffic itself is nonzero — while building AI visibility primarily through the channels with demonstrated influence: the comparison pages, review roundups and community platforms that answers actually draw from.
Setup is small: generate a key, host the key file, ping on publish and update (most CMS plugins automate this), and verify coverage in Bing Webmaster Tools, which is also where the site’s Bing-side index reports live — worth checking because a site absent from Bing’s index has at least one more reason to be absent from Bing-fed answers. Keep expectations calibrated: no Bing setup substitutes for being mentioned on the pages engines cite. The useful mental model is two layers — infrastructure (crawl access, indexation, IndexNow) and evidence (mentions and citations on the pages that matter).
Bing tooling serves the first layer; link and mention campaigns serve the second, and the second is where visibility in answers is actually decided.
