Product-led growth and content loops

Product-led growth (PLG) builds acquisition into the product itself — free tiers, self-serve onboarding, virality loops — and its content strategy builds loops alongside: each asset (tool, template, comparison, integration) designed to send users into the product and each product interaction back into content.

In practice

The loop replaces the funnel’s linearity: instead of content → lead → sales, the PLG version runs product → usage → shareable artifact → new user, and content is designed at each joint.

The loop types that earn links as a side effect: the tool loop (the free calculator whose output page is shareable — every shared result is a link opportunity), the template loop (the artifact users produce carries the brand and invites “how it was made” content), the comparison loop (users searching “X vs Y” land on the comparison page, convert, and later cite it in their own content), and the integration loop (each partnership adds both product capability and a content surface — the marketplace listing, the joint page).

The link programme plugs into the loops directly: the assets the loops produce are the linkable assets (tools, templates, data) that earn citations unprompted, and the placements amplify the entry points (the roundup linking the free tool converts better than one linking a feature list). The measurement inherits the loop structure: per loop, entries (sessions by source), activations (trial starts from the asset), and the links each loop earned — because a loop that generates users but no citations still needs the placement layer, and a loop generating citations but no users is content theatre.

The honest boundary: loops compound slowly and need product quality to work — the link programme can route traffic to them, but the loop’s engine is the product experience; the discipline is sequencing placements to the loops that are actually turning, not to the ones the roadmap promises.
