Prompt sets (building the measurement baseline)

A prompt set is the fixed list of questions — written the way buyers actually ask — against which AI visibility is measured repeatedly; it is the denominator that turns "are we in the answers" into a trackable percentage with trend and rotation.

In practice

The prompt set is to AI visibility what the keyword list is to rank tracking: without it, measurement has no denominator and every claim is an anecdote. Building one: harvest the buyer’s questions from every source that speaks in their voice — sales and support transcripts, Reddit and forum threads, PAA, the competitor comparison space — then curate to a workable size (dozens to a hundred-plus prompts for a serious programme), split by intent (definition, comparison, ranking, recommendation — because stability differs sharply by intent: definitional answers hold, recommendations re-roll) and weighted by commercial relevance.

The measurement design the set enables: run all prompts against the public interfaces (not APIs — they behave differently) on a fixed cadence — at least four runs a month, because half of top answers shift within minutes and a single run is noise; record per run which brands are named, which pages are cited; report presence percentage, rotation (entries and exits), and the mention-citation quadrant per intent. The set’s maintenance: refreshed quarterly — prompts migrate as the category’s language moves — with changes versioned so trends stay comparable.

The discipline it enforces is the honesty layer: any claim about AI visibility (“we’re in ChatGPT now”) is checked against the set, on the cadence, with the percentage — which is what separates a monitoring programme from screenshots.
