Share of voice turns presence into a comparable number: across a fixed prompt set, run repeatedly, the share of answers that name the brand — and the share that cite its pages — becomes a trend the whole category can be ranked on, because competitors’ names appear in the same answers. The measurement discipline carries over from AI monitoring: a defined prompt set covering the buyer’s question space, split by intent (definition, comparison, ranking, recommendation), run on a schedule from public interfaces, reported as share with rotation — because a share built from one run is noise wearing a percentage.
The competitive read is the payoff: the quadrant of mention share versus citation share separates brands that are named everywhere but sourced nowhere (a mention footprint to defend and deepen) from those cited without being named (a citability gap), from the leaders holding both, from the absent. For an agency’s own programme the same math applies: the category’s “best link building agency” prompts have their own share of voice, and the placement targets are the pages the answers cite.
What share of voice cannot promise: a target percentage by a date — the denominator moves as engines update and prompts migrate, and no vendor controls either. What it does deliver: an honest, comparable, trendable definition of “are we visible in AI” that replaces anecdotes — and an early-warning line, because a competitor’s share climbing in your intent clusters is visible quarters before it is visible in revenue.
