In practice
A citation is not the same as a mention. Your product can be named in an answer with no source attached, or the answer can cite a page that compares tools and name you inside that source. The citation is the traceable part — you can see which page the engine leaned on — which makes it the measurable end of AI visibility work. Citations concentrate on a narrow set of pages: comparison lists, review roundups, alternatives pages, documentation of the tools themselves. That concentration is the opportunity, because the set of cited pages for any buyer question is small enough to enumerate.
The method is to work backwards: run the questions your buyers actually ask, record which pages each answer cites, and get your brand onto those pages — as a listed product, a mentioned option, or the source of a comparison itself. The largest public test of what correlates with this visibility is Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands, which found branded web mentions correlating with AI Overview presence at 0.664 while backlinks correlated at 0.218 — a correlation, not a proven cause, since heavily mentioned brands tend to be well known anyway.
What a citation delivers directly is modest referral traffic and, more importantly, repeated brand exposure at the moment of comparison. It cannot be guaranteed: engines re-index and re-synthesise on their own schedule. What can be done is the placement, the tracking, and the honest reporting of what changed after it.
