Buying links (paid placements)

Buying links is paying a publisher — in money or exchange — for a placement carrying a link or mention; search engines prohibit it in their guidelines, devalue what they detect, and the residual risk sits with the buyer.

In practice

Search engines treat paid links without disclosure as link schemes: guidelines prohibit them, and systems that detect patterns — identical anchors across publishers, placement sites that sell to everyone, content that exists only to host links — discount the links and, at scale, can penalise. The practical market exists anyway, because paid placement is how most commercial categories acquire presence on pages that rank, and because detection mostly keys on patterns, not individual transactions. A buyer operating in that market needs three things stated plainly.

Risk allocation: bought links can be devalued, and the buyer carries that risk — a vendor should say so before approval, not bury it in a policy page. Transparency: which placements involved a fee, disclosed per placement, so the client knows what they approved. Pattern discipline: the programme’s shape — varied anchors, real publishers with audiences, unique content, no footprints across clients — is what separates placements that keep counting from placements that evaporate in the next devaluation sweep.

Labels are a separate decision from payment: some placements carry sponsored markers, others do not, and a buyer should understand that unmarked paid placements are the higher-risk configuration the guidelines specifically target. The honest comparison is with the alternative: earning links costs time and produces fewer of them; buying costs money and produces risk with it. Serious programmes mix both, screen every publisher as if the link were free, and monitor what remains live — because a paid link that stops counting is a cost with no return, and only monitoring reveals it.
