Content syndication

Content syndication is republishing an article that already exists on your site onto third-party platforms or publications, usually with attribution and a canonical reference back to the original.

In practice

Syndication trades uniqueness for distribution: the same article reaching a bigger audience on someone else’s platform. Handled correctly it is low-risk — the original stays the canonical version, the republished copy attributes and links back, and search engines consolidate the versions rather than competing them. Handled loosely it is how sites accidentally flood the index with duplicates and dilute their own pages.

For a link building programme the calculus is narrow: a syndicated article on a high-reach platform can earn the brand secondary exposure and the occasional natural link, but as a placement strategy it is weak — publishers and engines treat mass-syndicated content as commodity, and a link inside a copy of a copy carries little of the context that makes placements work.

The distinct failure mode to avoid is the “unique content” promise collapsing: a campaign selling placements that quietly re-issues the same article with light edits across publishers builds a duplicate footprint that reads exactly like what it is — one text, many mouths, no editorial interest. The quality bar in this programme’s terms: every placement is unique, drafted for that publisher and that audience; syndication, where a client wants the distribution, is a separate, labelled activity run on clearly secondary platforms — never disguised as fresh placements.

For AI visibility the duplicate question matters too: engines prefer clean, authoritative originals to cite, and a web of near-copies forces them to pick, often not the version you wanted. If you syndicate, canonicalise, attribute, and keep the crown jewels unique.
