Link velocity (link growth rate)

Link velocity is the rate at which a website gains (or loses) backlinks and referring domains over time, usually graphed per month and compared against growth in content, traffic and brand search.

In practice

Velocity is a description, not a verdict. A monthly count of new referring domains tells you how fast a profile is growing and whether growth is steady, spiked or stalling. That is genuinely useful — it catches a rogue freelancer dumping 300 links in a week, or a campaign that quietly died in month three. It becomes a myth when people invert it and claim Google punishes “too fast” growth: search engines do not penalise popularity, and a spike that reflects real news coverage is natural by definition.

What does correlate with trouble is velocity without a story. If the link line rises steeply while content output, brand searches and traffic stay flat, the profile looks bought. A brand-new domain that instantly out-links established competitors invites scrutiny, because the only plausible explanations are payment or spam. The sensible management rule is pacing rather than fear: keep acquisitions tied to a programme cadence your editorial and business calendar can explain.

At the US search level, “link velocity” draws only around 200 monthly searches at low difficulty — a term practitioners discuss far more than site owners actually look up, which tells you how much of it is vendor vocabulary.

Velocity also deserves a GEO footnote: AI engines reward brands that appear consistently across platforms, and a profile that grows links in visible pulses tends to correlate with mentions that appear and vanish just as fast. Graph the link line next to the mention line and read them together; if one moves without the other, you are buying something nobody is talking about.
