Backlink gap analysis

Backlink gap analysis compares the backlink profiles of competitors against yours to find the domains and pages that link to them but not to you — turning the difference into a concrete prospect list.

In practice

The gap analysis is the link building plan’s engine, because it replaces guessing with enumeration: the set of publishers that have already linked to something like your product is finite and visible. The mechanics: pick three to five real competitors — companies your buyers shortlist you against — export their referring domains, subtract yours, and sort what remains by relevance and strength.

The raw list then gets read at page level, which is where the value hides: a competitor with a hundred links to their blog is less interesting than one with thirty links to their alternatives page, because the second tells you which specific roundup pages your category’s buyers meet. Each promising domain becomes a prospect with a known context — the article that would carry your link already exists in their history, which makes outreach concrete rather than speculative. The same read works for AI visibility: pages that cite competitors’ comparisons but not yours are the placement targets for brand mentions. Two honest caveats.

Gap data is an estimate — tools sample the web, so absence from the list is not proof of absence in reality. And the gap is not a to-do list to copy blindly: a competitor’s link from a random directory is not evidence the directory matters; filter hard for publishers your buyers actually read. Run the analysis quarterly for an active programme — gaps shift as competitors publish and campaigns land.
